Gwira Traditional Council reiterates banning Okobeng Mining Limited from mining in Dominase

The Gwira Traditional Council has countered one Alu Menza III purported to be the Head of the Family of Amankrapanyin claims that it has not banned Okobeng Mining Company Limited in the area.

The Traditional Council has called on the general public to disregard reports claiming otherwise and treat them with the contempt it deserves.

This comes after Alu Menza III refuted a statement announcing the ban of Okobeng Mining Limited.

Addressing a press conference on Thursday, February 2, the Head of the Amankrapanyin family, Nana Alu Menza III stated that Angama Tuagyan who is reported to have issued the statement has no authority to do so as he is not the recognized Paramount Chief of Gwira.

According to him, his chieftaincy claim is currently being challenged at the Sekondi High Court and he is yet to be issued a gazette certifying his claim to the Gwira stool.

Thus, the embattled chief has no chieftaincy and traditional authority to ban Okobeng Mining Company which has been legally mining in the area for almost 25 years without violating the Minerals and Mining Act, 2006(ACT 703).

He noted that Okobeng Mining Company Limited, as a result, can continue mining on its concession at Dominase.

However, in a statement issued on February 4, 2023, and copied to MetroTVOnline, the Gwira Traditional Council stated that Awulae Angama Tu-Agyan II is the substantive Omanhene and President of the Gwira Traditional Council, A member of the Western Regional House of Chiefs for over 23 years and a member of the National House of chiefs.

The statement further noted that Awuale Angama Tu-Agyan II and Nananom of the Gwira Traditional Council banning Okobeng Mining to stop mining in the Gwira Traditional Area still holds and has not been refuted.

“Anybody who deals with Okobeng Mining Company in the Gwira Traditional Area do so at his or her own RISK,” it cautioned.
