IGP Dampare is mismanaging police affairs; I can do a better job – COP George Mensah

Commissioner of Police (COP), George Alex Mensah, has vehemently stated that the current Inspector General of General (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare is not on top of his job.

Appearing before the Ad-Hoc Committee established by Parliament to investigate and ascertain the veracity or otherwise of the tape on Thursday, August 31, COP George Mensah asserted that Dr. Dampare is mismanaging the affairs of the Ghana Police Service.

“I will not deny that statement. The current IGP is not managing the Police Service well. You can do your investigations and underground searches, [and] you will get the truth,” COP George Mensah stated.

COP George Mensah also noted that his voice on the tape had been doctored to suit an agenda.

“This cheap tape played is an edited tape. I have not heard any original tape,’ he told the Parliamentary Ad-Hoc committee investigating the tape on Thursday, August 31.

“The tape I heard today, there are so many things we discussed that are not on the tape,” contradicting himself after denying

“My voice is not on the tape, I cannot identify that voice in the recording,” COP George Mensah exclaimed.

In the now viral tape, some senior police officers and a politician were plotting to oust the Inspector General of Police Dr. George Akuffo Dampare from office.

They accused him of being a pro-NDC and argued that there was no way the governing NPP would ‘break the 8’ if he remained in office.

The leaked audio prompted the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, to form the Committee. The seven-member Committee comprises representatives from both the Majority and Minority sides of Parliament, as well as a technical expert.

The Committee’s mandate is to investigate the secret recording and its implications regarding the alleged plot to remove IGP Dampare from office. It is set to deliver its findings by September 10, 2023.
