Impunity against journalists must end – GJA demands

The President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Albert Dwumfour has called for the end of attacks and brutality against members of the Fourth Estate of the Realm.
Every November 2 is marked for the celebration of the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists.

In commemorating the day, GJA President Albert Dwumfour pointed out that the worsening situation of press freedom and safety in Ghana, a country that was once celebrated globally as a beacon of democracy and media liberty in Africa is a cause of worry.

The Ghana Journalists Association has recorded an alarming 45 cases of assaults and attacks on media professionals and media organizations between 2019 and 2023. The rise in the trends indicates that the year 2023 has recorded the highest number of cases per year, with October 2023 setting an unfortunate record by having the highest number of incidents in a single month with four cases.

“We urge the Attorney-General and the Police to prefer the requisite charges against people who indulge in such impunity to ensure the imposition of maximum punishment against them. We also urge the Judiciary not to be lenient with convicts of such crime to deter others from doing same.” Mr. Dwumfour said.

The GJA marks this year’s International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists with the hope that it will serve as a pivotal in Ghana’s journey toward ending crimes against journalists and restoring the nation’s path of righteousness regarding media freedom.
