It’s not Bawumia’s time to lead the NPP; he should wait — Former Ambassador

Former Ghana’s Ambassador to Guinea, Alhaji Musah Sheriff, has dismissed claims that Muslim-dominated communities are rallying behind Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to win the NPP flagbearership race.

According to him, the Muslim communities are looking for a competent person who will not only be a flagbearer but also win the 2024 general elections for the NPP.

He noted that Dr. Bawumia cannot lead the party at this particular moment to win the forthcoming general election.

Speaking exclusively with Metro News ahead of the Special Delegates Conference of the New Patriotic Party slated for August 26, 2023, the former Ghana’s Ambassador to Guinea, Alhaji Musah Sheriff, who was also the NPP’s parliamentary candidate for the Asawase constituency in the Ashanti Region disclosed that the governing party rewards hard work and long service not ethnic or religious-based.

Ghana’s Political history has operated a trajectory of peaceful coexistence and cohesiveness within the religious space even though the two most dominant religions in the country have influenced the outcome of elections.

Alhaji Musah Sheriff believes the NPP’s tradition is such that long service to the party has been the hallmark for rewarding party stewards therefore he urged the party delegates to reward Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen to lead the party as the flagbearer going into the 2024 general elections, adding that the Vice President Dr Bawumia should wait for his turn after some years.

He stressed that Alan Kyerematen is the only one among the ten contestants who have a manifesto indicating that he has a vision for the party and the county at large.

Ten people, including former Trade Minister, Alan Kyerematen, are in the race to lead the NPP in the 2024 presidential elections.

Balloting on July 26 for the ten aspirants as announced by the spokesperson for the NPP’s Elections Committee, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, “has the candidates appearing on the ballot papers as; Ken Ohene Agyapong (one), Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen (two), Joe Ghartey (three), Kwadwo Poku (four), Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto (five), Kwabena Agyei Agyepong (six), Francis Addai Nimoh (seven), Dr Kofi Konadu Apraku (eight), Boakye Kyeremanteng Agyarko (nine) and Dr Mahamudu Bawumia (10).”

The August 26 super delegates conference will reduce the number of aspirants down to five to make way for the presidential primaries to select a flagbearer on November 4.
