Kojo Thompson calls for the remapping of constituencies in Ghana

A communications team member of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has expressed worry over the demarcations of constituencies in Ghana.

Alfred Kojo Thompson believes the division of some constituencies was done haphazardly, making them find their way into other constituencies and creating confusion.

“When you are talking about the constituency, when you go to Gomoa East, you know they have some place carved into the Kasoa enclave, so, you have someplace that is Gomoa East then, you come to Hawa Koomson’s constituency, then you go back to Gomoa East. So, when I was going around, I asked myself how are we doing all these things?” he wondered.

Making his submission on Good Morning Ghana on Metro TV on Friday, 21st April 2023, the former NPP Cape Coast Parliamentary Candidate aspirant suggested a remapping of the entire constituencies for better understanding and positioning.

“Don’t you think we have to do some remapping of these whole constituencies and place things well because I don’t see how you can move from one constituency, go to another constituency and then, go back into the constituency,” Kojo Thompson averred.

Wading into the conversation, the Shai Osudoku MP hopeful, Prof. Michael Kpessa-Whyte intimated that such happenings marginalize parts of these constituencies that are not properly defined.

He cited his constituency intertwining with the Manya Krobo Constituency.

“A similar situation is Shai Osudoku. So, when you move from Akuse Junction which I believe is in Yilo, moving towards Akuse, Natreku, Momekope… I believe, Nakope and then Father Israel, all those communities over there are in Shai Osudoku. But, when you move from there and you get into Akuse proper, it is in Manya. As soon as you get down from Akuse, you are back in Shai Osudoku. So, Akuse becomes an island of some sort within Shai Osudoku but not belonging to Shai Osudoku. So, the problem for that constituency, for that community is, it has been completely neglected. Because, practically speaking and physical view of it suggests that it’s in Shai Osudoku but in terms of the real demarcations, it’s under Manya,” he argued.

The issue of resource distribution to constituencies was also highlighted as a difficulty by the host of the show.

Although Mr. Thompson agreed to these situations spanning from colonial administration and others also being politically inclined, he called for a reorganization of these constituencies.

“And we need to look at it. We need to reorganize ourselves. As we are changing, with time and time, we need to change certain things. Because, we cannot say that because in the colonial days, it was this way, and that is the same way we are going to follow. ”
