Kwabre East youths threaten to vote against NPP over abandoned projects

Youth in Mamponteng community in the Kwabre East Municipality of the Ashanti region have bared teeth at the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) over some abandoned projects in the area.

The livid youth have sworn to punish the NPP in the December 7 presidential and parliamentary elections by voting massively for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), should the government refuse to meet their demands.

The youth who took to the streets on Thursday March 14, 2024 told Metro TV’s Ashanti Regional Correspondent Abdul Basit Suleiman that since Ghana returned to democracy, Kwabre East and other adjoining communities have been voting for the NPP, wondering why their side of the country has not seen any major development.

They lamented how some football pitches that are under construction at Mamponteng, Ahwiaa, remain stagnant while there is no assurance from the political leaders in the area.

The youth wielding placards with various inscriptions, stormed one of the abandoned Astro Turf construction sites to express their displeasure over what they described as government neglect of its ‘vote basket’.

“In this Kwabre East in the 2020 general elections we voted massively for the NPP with over 80 thousand votes which accounted for the win of the party in both presidential and parliamentary elections but now they have neglected us. So we will also vote against them in December 2024 if they don’t come to complete all the abandoned projects,” the youth noted.

Mamponteng town roads, completion of market project, health facility and three football pitches are some of the projects they listed as being abandoned by the ruling NPP.

“Our biggest headache is the playing fields, which the government through the national youth Authority decided to upgrade into an Astro Turf but was abandoned along the way after erecting some semi structures and deposit chippings on the fields for over 2 years now”

“They have to complete the three Astro Turfs at Mamponteng, Ahwiaa and Asonomaso to help youth develop more talents in the area, as well as uniting us since the only source of fun for us here at Kwabre East is football,” Akwasi Oppong youth activist explained.

They claimed there has been a growing social vices and violence in the community as a result of joblessness, hence the call for expedite action on stalled projects.
