Major (rtd) Boakye-Djan dies aged 81

Major (retired) Kojo Boakye-Djan, the Ghanaian military officer, and politician, has died.

Known to have plotted the June 4, 1979, coup that brought Flight Lieutenant Jerry John Rawlings to power in Ghana, Boakye-Djan died on Wednesday, August 30, 2023, at the 37 Military Hospital in Accra after a short illness.

He was 81 years old.

Boakye-Djan, a former member of the Armed Forces Revolutionary Council (AFRC) played a pivotal role in the June 4 uprising.

Barely three months after capturing power, the AFRC handed over power on September 24, 1979, to President Hilla Limann, who was elected through universal adult suffrage.

He was the AFRC’s spokesperson and the late Flt Lt. J.J. Rawlings, the uprising’s leader.

Young Boakye-Djan attended Opoku Ware School in Kumasi for his Ordinary (O) Level certificate and Achimota School for his sixth form Advanced Level certificate.

He served as the best man at the wedding of Rawlings and Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings.
