Minerals Commission rejects application by company to mine in Kakum National Park

The Minerals Commission revealed in a press release that it had denied a mining company’s request to permit mining within the Kakum National Park.

The commission issued the ruling in response to an application for a mining license from High Street Limited that was filed with the park.

A large number of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) have voiced their strong opposition to the proposal due to their concerns about the possible harm that mining operations could do to the environment and the destruction of natural ecosystems.

The mining company’s attempt to utilize the park’s resources has been vigorously opposed by the CSOs.

The Minerals Commission decided to deny High Street Limited’s application following careful review and in response to the CSOs’ concerns.

Therefore, no further action will be taken about the application, and it has been removed from the online mining cadastre.

The commission wants to reassure the people that it is dedicated to preserving the nation’s natural resources, which includes Kakum National Park. Within the park, no mineral rights will be allowed for mining or exploration. The choice is in line with the need to protect the park’s rich biodiversity and its standing as a treasured piece of national heritage.

Environmental groups and nature lovers have hailed the Minerals Commission’s decision to reject the mining application, praising them for placing a higher priority on maintaining the park’s natural beauty.

Chief Executive Officer Martin Kwaku Ayisi of the Minerals Commission stresses that the organization will continue to fulfill its duty to protect Ghana’s natural resources and promote sustainable development that benefits both the country’s current and future generations of citizens.
