My govt will pay living allowance to paramount chiefs, queen mothers – Bawumia

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has pledged to pay a living allowance to Paramount Chiefs and Queen Mothers if he wins the 2024 presidential election.

Addressing the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs, Dr. Bawumia said the Chieftaincy institution must be resourced to carry out its responsibilities effectively.

He noted that the current situation, where chiefs are tasked with responsibilities without adequate resources, is unacceptable.

The Vice President proposed a monthly living allowance of GH¢1,000 for Paramount Chiefs, divisional chiefs, and Queen Mothers, acknowledging that the current situation makes it difficult for them to even attend meetings.

Dr. Bawumia also promised to amend the Chieftaincy Act to empower chiefs to enforce discipline in their communities, citing the lack of discipline in many societies due to the limited powers of chiefs.

The proposed amendment to Section 63D of the Chieftaincy Act aims to give more power back to the chiefs, enabling them to resolve disputes swiftly and reduce the backlog of cases in the courts.
