My life is under threat, I won’t seek re-election – Nii Lante Vanderpuye

Member of Parliament for Odododiodio Constituency, Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye, has disclosed that one of the reasons behind his decision to abandon Parliament in 2024 is due to the threats on his life

Speaking on Good Morning Ghana on Metro TV, the lawmaker explained how he narrowly escaped death as a bullet meant for him was received by his polling station agent who died during the last general election.

“The last election had a toll on me and up to today, I continue to think about the young man who died, who took a bullet for me, Emmanuel Dompreh, many people did not know what happened and we did not really tell the story. It was an assassination attempt on me and he just, I don’t know, by the design of God just walked through and took the bullet”

Nii Lante Vanderpuye explained that the deceased Emmanuel Dompreh, his polling station agent had submitted his pink sheets and proceeded to the hotel he (Nii Lante Vanderpuye) had lodged with his security when the unfortunate incident occurred.

“Dompreh was our agent at Sakumotsoshishi, he had submitted his pink sheets so he was with us, so he was ushered, so as soon as the door was opened, I was pulled back by my security, so that he (Dompreh) will come out and others will follow, as soon as the door was opened and I was pulled back, Dompreh appeared and took the bullet on his chest. So, if Dompreh had not come to the hotel I was lodged and I was the first to step out, I would have taken the bullet. This was on the election night,” he said.

When asked by the host of the show if he knows the perpetrators of the heinous crime, Nii Lante Vanderpuye said “Oh we know them, the difficult aspect is that up to today, these boys are walking free, we made a report to the police, that day, I was arrested together with my team and collation officers and security, they were charged for the murder of my agent (Emmanuel Dompreh), so my people have been in court for all these years”

The Odododiodio MP bemoans the fact that the real culprits even though reported to the police were not arrested.

He also stated that his withdrawal from the parliamentary race was in the best interest of his political party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
