NDC Primaries: Preparations are far advanced to be postponed – – Edudzi Tamakloe

A leading member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Godwin Edudzi Tamakloe, says preparations towards the party’s presidential and parliamentary elections are far advanced to be rescheduled as flagbearer hopeful, Dr. Kwabena Duffuor requests.

Edudzi Tamakloe noted that all necessary materials needed for the election has been duly transported to the office of the Electoral Commission which looks at distributing the items to the various regions.

“All preparations towards the election are underway. I’m aware that the materials for the election have already been dispatched last week to the EC,” he said in response to a question asked by Dr. Randy Abbey on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana on Wednesday, May 10, 2023.

Mr Tamakloe indicated that the NDC is not rattled in the midst of an application of injunction filed by the flagbearer aspirant of the party, Dr. Kwabena Duffour.

He emphasized, however, that although the date on the injunction filed by Dr. Duffour is to be moved after the primaries are held, the party will not relent on the issue and assured that legal practitioners in the party will take up the issue and make their findings known thereafter.

The private legal practitioner was optimistic that the injunction filed by the flagbearer hopeful will be discontinued for the interest of the party.

“It may well even happen that Dr. Duffuor will generously even decide to discontinue, why not? He can even say that, you know, for the interest of the NDC, I want to discontinue this matter do that we will come home and see the best way,” he noted.

Background

The campaign team of Dr. Kwabena Duffour, a presidential hopeful on the ticket of the NDC raised concerns over some alleged irregularities in the voter register.

The team eventually called for an immediate round table discussion to address the matter and ensure a transparent and fair electoral exercise.

According to a press statement, the anomalies were first expressed in a letter dated 17th April 2023, where the campaign team requested access to the voters register, a basis for ascertaining the eligibility of voters in their incoming presidential and parliamentary primaries.

The statement added that following the said concerns raised on 2nd May 2023, a meeting was scheduled at the Party’s Headquarters, during which some information regarding the voter’s register was disclosed to Dr. Kwabena Duffour’s team.

Nonetheless, upon conducting a preliminary analysis of the information provided, the team discovered in what they deemed to be excessive anomalies in the register. The irregularities have raised doubts about the integrity of the electoral process and the accuracy of the voter data being presented by the NDC Elections Committee.

For this reason, Dr. Kwabena Duffour’s campaign team had urgently requested that the relevant stakeholders, including key actors within the party, be engaged in a round table discussion to address the identified issues promptly.
