NEDCo workers detained at UDS over power disconnection

Some members of the Loss Control of the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) were detained on the University for Development Studies (UDS) city campus in Tamale by staff and security personnel of the institution.

This was after the team disconnected the electricity supply to the university over the non-payment of GH¢447,000 in electricity bill.

The incident which lasted for almost two hours took the intervention of the military for the NEDCo staff to be released.

NEDCo had converted the university’s postpaid metre to prepaid in order for it to purchase its own power.

The UDS officials fought back against NEDCo’s decision. As a result, the power distribution business dispatched some of its employees to turn off the school’s power supply.

Following the disconnection, university security barred the main entrance while some of the personnel ordered the NEDCo staff who had gone to carry out the disconnection to reconnect the school to power.

The NEDCo personnel called management to update them on the situation at the university.

To save them, military soldiers had to be dispatched.
