NPP could’ve avoided special delegates conference – Kwakye Ofosu

A Communication Team Member of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Felix Kwakye Ofosu, says the governing NPP’s decision to organize a special delegates conference ahead of its presidential primaries was not thought through.

According to him, the party could have avoided such a conference and proceeded with the presidential primaries to select a leader to lead it to the 2024 elections.

“I have said before that I have difficulty, of course, eh, It does not lie in my mouth to prescribe for the NPP what they should do – their internal elections. But I have difficulties with this whole super [special] delegates conference or conference thing I have indicated before that I think it’s a knee-jerk response to criticism they suffered in 2007 after about 17 people showed up to a contest,” Kwakye Ofosu told Dr. Randy Abbey on Metro TV.

Speaking on Good Morning Ghana on Tuesday, August 22, 2023, the NDC Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem (KEEA) Parliamentary Candidate stressed on why the NPP should have forgone the special delegates conference option.

Kwakye Ofosu could not wrap his head around the justification for such a conference insisting the governing party erred in its decision.

“It is only ten people on the ballot paper. Um I don’t think that the delegates of the NPP would be so naïve as not to be able to determine who they want to pick out of ten such that some eh elites in the party have to constitute themselves into a eh a group of super delegates to go and determine for those at the grassroots what five people they should select their presidential from,” he said.

“But again, that is their own issue to deal with. I think they could have avoided it and gone ahead to do [the presidential primaries] it,” the NDC Communicator emphasized.

The NPP will on August 26th cut down the list of its presidential aspirants from 10 to five as stipulated in its constitution.
