NPP is not an Akan party-Justin Kodua

General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, has stated that the NPP is not an Akan-centric party, as evidenced by the selection of non-Akan Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as its flagbearer for the general election of 2024.

“The NPP has made history by electing Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia – a non-akan – to lead the party into the 2024 general elections as its flagbearer,” Kodua said. “This shows that the NPP is not an Akan party.”

In the race for NPP flagbearer, Bawumia defeated three rivals: Kennedy Agyapong, Owusu Afriyie Akoto, and Francis Addai-Nimoh.

Since the NPP’s founding in 1992, he is the only non-Akan leader to guide the group into a general election.

Kodua called on every member of the NPP to support Bawumia in the general election of 2024.

“We must all come together to support Dr Bawumia and ensure that the NPP wins the 2024 election. This is a historic moment for our party.”

Dr Bawumia defeated a field of three other candidates, including Kennedy Agyapong, the outspoken Assin Central MP, Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto, a former Minister for Agriculture and former Mampong MP, Francis Addai-Nimoh.

Certified results announced by a deputy Commissioner of the Electoral Commission, Dr Serebour Quaicoe, revealed that Dr Bawumia polled 118210 votes representing 61.47% while his closest contender Mr Agyapong polled 71,996 votes representing 37.41%.

Dr. Afriyie Akoto who placed a distant third polled 1,459 votes representing 0.76% while Addai-Nimoh garnered a meagre 731 representing 0.41%.

In the presidential primary on Saturday, 192 446 delegates cast ballots. There were 193, 346 valid votes in all, and 900 invalid votes. It came out to be 94.63%.

Although Dr. Bawumia was expected to win the presidential primary from the beginning, he fell short of the 80% mark that his campaign team had set.

Dr. Bawumia, a well-liked figure in the NPP, had the backing of numerous MPs and Ministers.

It is anticipated that 2024 will be a close election. Mahama and Bawumia are both deserving candidates, and each has advantages and disadvantages.

The results of the election will probably rely on a number of variables, such as the status of the economy, the campaigns of the candidates, and voter turnout.
