Our problem is the political class — Dr. Randy Abbey

Seasoned broadcaster, Dr. Randy Abbey, has once again pointed fingers at those in political positions, labeling them as the cause of the problem hindering the progress of the country.

During the Wednesday, July 19, 2023, edition of his Good Morning Ghana show on Metro TV, he stated categorically, “Our problem is the political class. At the Ministry of Finance, the minister and his high-level team are the dashboard of our debts.”

“At every hour, issues of our debt to GDP, debt sustainability, and others are like a dashboard in front of them. So, at every [point] in time, when they are going to borrow, they know the implications of this borrowing,” he added.

On the issue of the public sector having a different balance sheet distinct from that of the state, the morning show host alleged that “the political class has taken advantage of that, and they do a lot of things in that space that does not reflect in their books.”

He reiterated that “you [government] cannot pretend that the debt is not yours, and we know how [the] government itself has been using some of these agencies,” as institutions such as the ECG and, GNPC fully belong to the state.

These concerns and comments were raised during the analysis Of COCOBOD and its current position in the current economic hardship.

The Herald Newspaper has reported that the country’s cash cow, the Cocoa Sector is in a dire situation with 73 of its containers with Agrochemicals and Implements stuck at the Port of Tema for almost a year plus —a situation the paper explains is due to the government’s decision to withdraw tax exemptions enjoyed by COCOBOD over the years, insisting that the institution pays its import duty on all its imports into the country as happens with private companies.
