President Akufo-Addo Must Dissociate Himself From Bryan Acheampong’s Saga – Dr. Akwetey

In the midst of the controversial comment made by the MP for Abetifi, the Executive Director of the Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG), Dr. Emmanuel Akwetey has called for the intervention of President Akufo-Addo in the matter.

Mr. Acheampong, whiles, addressing party supporters at Mpraeso on Saturday said the ruling New Patriotic Party will never hand over power to the opposition NDC in 2025.

“NDC party will collapse. If the NDC dares to use threats, violence and foolishness in the 2024 election, we will let them know we have the men. We will show them that we have the men. We have the men![He screamed to emphasize]. It will never happen that we, the NPP, will stand on a platform to hand over power to the NDC. It will never happen! We will make sure NPP remains in government at all costs.”

The comments by the Abetifi MP have been condemned by many Ghanaians including the Minority and the NDC with the opposition party calling for the arrest and prosecution of the MP.

Despite the attacks on the NPP MP and Minister,  the party is of the firm opinion that the attacks on Mr. Acheampong are unwarranted and also an attempt by the NDC to seek attention from Ghanaians.

Reacting to the controversy, Dr. Emmanuel Akwetey noted that there is a need for President Akufo-Addo to intervene and calm the escalating tensions.

According to the Executive Director of IDEG, President Akufo-Addo must dissociate himself from the comment of the MP for Abetifi and also stress that the opinion of the Minister for Agriculture is not his policy.

“But finally, I think the person to speak is the President on this matter, and his ability to dismiss it as not his policy is extremely important,” he said.
