Recruit experts to manage ECG under state ownership – IEA

“Given the inefficiencies in the current management of Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), consideration should be given to recruiting expert managers, wherever they may come from to manage ECG under state ownership,” says the Institute of Economic Affairs, Ghana (IEA).

The expert managers, the IEA stated, should be one capable and could be recruited both locally and internationally devoid of political interference and affiliation for a speedy resolve of Ghana’s power crisis.

Addressing the media at a conference on Wednesday, April 3, the Director of Research at IEA Ghana, Dr John Kwakye says the prevailed challenges in the Energy sector needs a wholistic approach to stem the periodic outages.

“The solution should include how to deal with the legacy debts, improve the efficiency at the electricity company of Ghana, including by reducing the industry high distribution losses, improving bill collections, stemming illegal connections and moving to legitimate cause recovery tariffs”, he said.

Dr. John Kwakye was reacting to President Akufo-Addo’s State of the Nation Address delivered on February 27, and the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Ernest Addisson’s Monetary Policy Committee decision on March 25.

Meanwhile, Ranking Member on Parliament’s Mines and Energy Committee, John Jinapor says Ghana has officially ceased the provision of electrical power to its West African neighbors, Cote d’Ivoire and Burkina Faso.
