I don’t see any use of Sanitation Ministry – Mahama

Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama says the Sanitation Ministry has lost its essence and has no use.

During a lecture at Wisconsin University in Accra, the Ex-President says Accra has become one of the dirtiest cities in Ghana even though the ministry has been well resourced and he will scrap the Ministry if he is made president in 2025

“We will close down the Ministry of Sanitation, 1. To reduce expenditure, and 2., I don’t see any use, Accra, our Country is dirtier than when there was no ministry of Sanitation. Indeed, this Country was cleaner when sanitation was under local government than as a stand-alone ministry. And so, we will close down that ministry and we will take the sanitation schedule back to local government”

During a special public lecture titled “An Interaction with Students and Faculty of WIUC-Ghana, John Dramani Mahama emphasized the need to reduce the number of ministries and Government expenditure by merging other ministries.

“Transport, aviation and railway ministry will be closed down and send them back to the transport ministry. We are going to combine communications and information again,” he added.

John Mahama believes sanitation matters should be decentralized and responsibilities behooves on the district assemblies to ensure cleanliness in their communities.

“With cleanliness, we think that it is the duty of the district assemblies, every assembly has an obligation to make sure that its district is clean. And so, we must decentralize sanitation to the district level and it must be a criteria for the performance for the District Chief Executives (DCEs) that if we come to your district and your district is dirty, that will be one of the performance indicators,” says John Dramani Mahama.
