A non-governmental organisation known as the Resolve Group made up of a team of students offering MSC Development Management at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science & Technology (KNUST) has launched a project aimed at encouraging healthy hygiene practices and behaviors in Ghanaian basic schools.

Ultimately, the group aims to drastically reduce the spread of diseases like cholera and dysentery in schools.

UNICEF estimates about 600 million children around the world do not have basic sanitation services in their schools and about 90 percent of diarrheal diseases and other infections are traced to basic sanitation and hygienic problems.

“We settled on this school [Kwabenya M/A JHS] because we realized the sanitation situation in this school is deplorable…their toilet facilities are in a bad shape…so we decided to embark on a programme to sensitize students on the need to keep their bodies and surroundings,” said the Public Relations Officer.

Paul Mintah, Assemblymember, Kwabenya Electoral Area

Environmental Health Officer at the Ga West Municipality, Prosper Aklate, who was grateful for the gesture said “..Maintaining good hygiene is a way of life, and people must be intentional about proper hygiene and keep their surroundings clean.”

The launch of the project was climaxed with a donation of toiletries and sanitary pad to the pupils.
