Retaining Ofori-Atta after Parliament impeachment will be height of impunity – Inusah Fuseini

Former Member of Parliament for Tamale Central says President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will have no option but to terminate the appointment of Ken Ofori-Atta as Finance Minister if Parliament votes to impeach him.

Inusah Fuseini said although President Akufo-Addo is constitutionally mandated to appoint and remove ministers his failure to act on the decision Parliament takes will be the height of impunity.

Speaking on News Beat on Metro TV Wednesday afternoon, the former lawmaker said the Jubilee House occupant cannot ignore the verdict of Parliament on the performance of the Finance Minister.

“The constituency uses may. The president may act but I don’t see how the president may ignore the votes of a two-thirds majority of the people of this country,”  Inusah Fuseini told Kenneth Gyasi.

“It will be the height of impunity,”

Several Ghanaians including the majority caucus of Parliament are calling on President Akufo-Addo to dismiss Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta and the Minister of State at the Ministry of Finance, Mr. Charles Adu Boahen in the wake of the harsh economic situation.

They share the sentiment Mr. Ofori-Atta has performed abysmally and that removing him will restore confidence in the financial sector.

However, President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has asked the New Patriotic Party Members of Parliament (MPs) demanding the removal of Ken Ofori-Atta as Finance Minister to hold on till Ghana concludes negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

The President says, terminating the appointment of Mr. Ofori-Atta will disrupt the programme.

At a meeting with the aggrieved MPs at the Jubilee House, Nana Akufo-Addo appealed for calm.
