Second meeting of first session of 8th Parliament ends

The Second Meeting of the First Session of the Eighth Parliament will end today, Friday, 6th of August, 2021. The Meeting, which began on Tuesday, 25th May 2021 saw a total of 4 Bills presented to the House.

These Bills are;

  • National Centre for the Coordination of Early Warning and Response Mechanisms Bill, 2021
  • Office of the Special Prosecutor (Amendment) Bill, 2021
  • Criminal Offences (Amendment) Bill, 2021
  • Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, 2021

A total of 801 questions were filed during the Meeting. Out of this number, 532 were admitted and 204 of the questions were answered by the respective Sector Ministers. A total of 29 urgent and 175 oral questions with eight (Private Members’ Motions were filed. The Chartered Institute of Bankers, Ghana Regulations, 2021 was the only Legislative Instrument presented to the House during this meeting.

The Finance Minister attended upon the House to deliver the Mid-Year Review of the Budget Statement and Economic Policy of the Government of Ghana and Supplementary Estimate for the 2021 financial year.

During this Meeting, Parliament joined the various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies to undertake the National Tree Planting Exercise as part of the green Ghana campaign to sustain the environment, protect and restore ecosystems and address land-based pollution.

The various Committees met as part of Parliament’s oversight duties and they presented their reports to the plenary for further scrutiny and adoption. The Public Accounts Committee and the Appointments

Committee sat in public. The Appointments Committee vetted and passed a total of eighty-one Ministers and Deputy Minister and the Special Prosecutor nominated by His Excellency, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

The Angolan President, H.E João Manuel Gonsalves Lourenço on a three-day state visit to Ghana, addressed the August House on Tuesday 3rd August 2021.

Other events during this Meeting include the Inauguration of the Management Committee of Parliamentary Friendship Associations and the Conferment of the Millennium Excellence Award for Member of Parliament of the Decade on the Rt. Hon Speaker of Parliament.

The House is expected to commence the Third Meeting of the First Session on 19th October 2021.
