Secret recording of plot to remove IGP was unnecessary – – Deputy Information Minister

Deputy Minister of Information, Fatima Abubakar has said the leaked tape involving Bugri Naabu, COP George Alex Mensah and Superintendent George Asare plotting to oust the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, from office should not have been recorded to begin with.

Speaking on Good Morning Ghana on Metro TV, Fatima Abubakar expressed her disappointment in Bugri Naabu for doing such especially when parties involved were not in the known.

“According to the 1992 Constitution, Article 18 (2), you are guaranteed a right to communication and correspondence except where its in the public interest…whoever recorded the audio I don’t think has done either the COP (Alex Mensah) , the IGP or anyone in the Police Service any good. My concern is the fact that the broadcasting of the parliamentary probe has given fuel or allow for some allegations to be further amplified and publicized, ” she argued.

The Former Northern Regional Chairman of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Daniel Bugri Naabu, confirmed, he masterminded the recording of the conversation for the benefit of the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, for him to know some of the concerns and discussions within the corridors of the police service and to protect the electoral fortunes of the NPP.

“I recorded the tape myself. The truth of the matter is that the tape is correct. That is my voice,” Bugri Naabu told the seven-member special parliamentary committee probing the alleged plot to remove the IGP.

Fatima Abubakar Esq. also believes the Inspector General of Police, George Akuffo Dampare has some questions to answer based on allegations raised by COP Alex Mensah.

This, she said, will clear the dust and put thoughts to rest.

“If I watch what the man is saying in the probe and I don’t hear the IGP’s response, no matter how innocent he is, you don’t assume that everyone listening to some of these publications are at the same level as you and will appreciate the issues the way you do, ” she said.
