We’ll Do Everything Under The Sun To Stop The Passing Of New CI – Sammy Gyamfi

The National Communications Officer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi has vowed that his party will go all length to ensure that the Electoral Commission’s new Constitutional Instrument (CI) before parliament for approval does not see the light of day.

The Electoral Commission in an attempt to reform Ghana’s electoral processes has laid a new CI before parliament. Among a number of reforms, the main objective is to ensure that the Ghana Card becomes the sole document for registering as a voter, hence abrogating all other forms including the guarantor system.

The new CI, according to the Public Affairs Directorate of Parliament is currently under stakeholder engagement where parliament is seeking the views of interested parties on how to shape the law.

Due to the controversial nature of the CI, parliament has summoned the EC boss and the Head of the NIA, Jean Mensa and Professor Kenneth Ataffuah to the House to clarify matters. In addition, given the financial difficulties that the NIA is grappling with, Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta was also hauled before the House to give assurances on how the issues can be addressed.

Despite all these assurances by the management of these institutions crucial to the new CI, Sammy Gyamfi has indicated that the NDC does not believe the assurances given by these persons.

Speaking on Good Morning Ghana on Metro TV with Dr. Randy Abbey on Thursday, March 2nd, 2023, the National Communications Officer opined that the new CI is a deliberate attempt by the EC to disenfranchise eligible voters and also create an avenue for them to rig the 2024 Elections.

“The newly proposed CI seeks to achieve two things, Number one is to suppress and disenfranchise many eligible voters and Number two is the new proposed CI seeks to enable the rigging of the election through fraudulent registrations that political parties cannot check,” he stated.

He further added that “the woman is just lying and I cannot for the life of me understand why a woman who has been promoted to such a high office, such an important office, very crucial to the democracy and stability of this country will tog with the peace and stability of this country by peddling such falsehood.”

In view of these and other reasons, Sammy Gyamfi emphasized that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is committed to pay every cost in order to ensure that parliament does not pass the CI laid before it.
