We’ll frequent IMF if we fail to restructure the fundamentals of our economy – Kwesi Pratt

Seasoned Ghanaian Journalist, Kwesi Pratt Jnr., has stated that Ghana will be heading back to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) even after securing the current deal under negotiation.

“We will be going back to the IMF pretty soon. After this one — pretty soon. If we do not engage in the fundamental restructuring of the Ghanaian economy,” Mr. Pratt said on Good Morning Ghana on Metro TV on Wednesday, April 12, 2023.

He implied that the fundamental restructuring of the economy has two objects, explaining that it has to do with owning resources and exploiting the resources.

He added that when Ghana take ownership of its resources and exploits them fully, it will be able to empower Ghanaians socially, politically, and economically.

Mr. Pratt further mentioned that many policies implemented in the country over the years have had no fundamental impact on the structures of the economy.

“Most of the time when you begin to talk about our fundamental restructuring of the national economy, we are told to look at the 1D1F. 1D1F. So far, it has not had any profound impact on the structure of our economy.”

He suggested rather an industrialization of projects necessary to change the fortunes of the country and alter the country’s over-reliance on importation.

“As we sit here, you go to every supermarket, any of the things that they call supermarket and so on, you find water being imported…drinking water being imported, toothpicks are still being imported. This is after seven years of 1D1F.”

He stressed however that the Ghanaian attitude towards the build-up of the economy is not promising enough, the reason the government ought to be berated for the stirrers of the helm of affairs to be kept on their toes.
