Concerned Bettors of Ghana reject 10% tax on betting

A group calling itself, Concerned Bettors of Ghana (CBOG), has rejected the 10% on all betting, games, and lottery wins introduced by the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP)

According to the group, the imposition of tax on the already tax-burdened society will trigger unrest.

The convener of the group, Richard Aguda, in a statement issued on Tuesday, April 11, 2023, argued that betting, games, and lotteries are people’s livelihoods and the new tax may propel them to resort to illicit means for survival.

“The CBOG wishes to state categorically that any further imposition of tax on the already tax-burdened society is a recipe for chaos and a means to find other criminal and dubious ways of survival,” excerpts of the statement said.

It added that “For the information of the government, betting, games, and lottery has become an avenue for livelihood for millions of Ghanaian youth due to unavailability of existing jobs.”

“The betting industry in Ghana has seen tremendous growth in the last decade due to the active involvement of Ghanaians, especially. the youth”

The statement further stated that any attempt by any government to further tax the very source of survival for many Ghanaians in this current economic hardship is clueless and must be rejected outright with the contempt it deserves.

“We call on [the] government to as o matter of urgency, withdraw the 10% tax by not assenting to the bill passed by Parliament,” it noted.
