We’ve mechanisms to deal with unexplained wealth — Amoako Twum

A Communication Team Member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Eric Amoako Twum, has said that the move made by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) to arrest and search the houses of embattled former Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources Cecilia Dapaah indicates that the government has the needed mechanisms to tackle issues of unfounded sources of wealth in the country.

According to Amoako Twum, “Once the OSP has taken charge and investigations are ongoing as to verify the sources of the funds, then I think that basically these are some of the things, we should sometimes applaud ourselves for.”

He explained the decision to investigate the Former Sanitation and Water Resources Minister means Ghana as a country has the “mechanisms in place to deal with some of these challenges and issues when they come up”.

To him, this proves a working government because it would have been a different narration if Ghanaians woke up and see nothing being done about it after the public outcry.

“The President has acted in earnest, a new minister has been appointed, some slight changes have been done in government and so the Government Machinery … is still moving,” Eric opined.

The Office of the Special Prosecutor is tasked with the mandate of investigating and prosecuting all suspected cases of corruption and corruption-related offenses in Public Offices, Private Sectors, and Politically Exposed Individuals who are alleged to be involved in any corruption or corruption-related activities.

The OSP on Monday arrested Cecilia Abena Dapaah and conducted a search in her official residence as sector Minister at Cantonments and her private residence at Abelemkpe in Accra, where the said theft reportedly took place between July and October 2022.

Meanwhile, pressure group, OccupyGhana is calling on the government to liaise with Parliament to pass the Conduct of Public Officers Bill to help check and regulate the wealth of persons serving in public portfolios.

The pressure group in a statement said the President must summon an emergency cabinet meeting for the sole purpose of finding ways to approve the Bill.
