1 dead, 3 others injured in military shootout in Karaga

15-year old girl Amina Issahaku lost her life after military officers allegedly opened fire at the Karaga Chief’s Palace in the early hours of Monday March 25, 2024.

According to Metro TV’s Correspondent in the Northern Region, three other people sustained various degrees of injuries in the process and are in critical conditions.

Three persons were identified to have sustained injuries, while one, Amina Issahaku was pronounced dead at Tamale Teaching hospital upon arrival.

This morning’s military action was as a result of an installation of a regent in Karaga against the directives of the Regional Security Council.

Giving background to what led to the incident, Metro TV’s Alhassan D Baba explained that after the demise of the former regent of Karaga, the Northern Regional Security Council warned the Mahami family not to install a new regent, a directive which was defied by the family.

The Karaga chieftaincy crisis all began after the Overlord of the Dagbon, Ya-Naa installed a new chief to the Karaga skin after the funeral of the former chief was successfully performed.

The Mahami family which has been on the Karaga skin for decades, opposed any installation of chief to the Karaga skin outside the Mahami family.

In their unsuccessful attempt to arrest the new regent, the military officers open fire at the Karaga chief’s palace, resulting in the death of one person and injuring three others who are in critical conditions at the Tamale teaching hospital.

Meanwhile, Yushaw Issahaku, father of the deceased, is calling for justice for his daughter.

He wondered why military officers in their right state of minds, should open fire on people without any provocation.

He has therefore called on government to identify those military officers and bring them to justice.
