18 NPP MPs bowing out of parliament

Eighteen members of Parliament (MPs) belonging to the ruling New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Majority Caucus have made it clear that they will not be running for reelection in the upcoming legislative term in 2024.

The NPP’s future in the upcoming years has become a topic of discussion and much conjecture as a result of this voluntary departure.

Several well-known MPs have announced their resignation, including Kyei Mensah Bonsu (Suame), Joe Osei Owusu (Bekwai), Atta Akyea (Abuakwa South), Joe Ghartey (Essikado Ketan), and Ken Agyapong (Assin Central). These were well-known NPP government members, and their departure will undoubtedly create a leadership and parliamentary representation void for the party.

Dan Botwe (Okere), Kwasi Amoako-Atta (Atiwa West), Dr. Kwaku Afriyie (Sefwi Wiaso), and Emmanuel Marfo (Oforikrom) are among the other MPs who decided to step down. Moreover, the following have decided not to run for reelection: Suleman Sanid (Ahafo Ano North), Kojo Kum (Ahanta West), Francisca Oteng (Kwabre East), Johnson Adu (Ahafo Ano South West), Francis Manu-Adabor (Ahafo Ano South-East), Nana Kwasi Adjei Boateng (New Juabeng North), Benito Owusu-Bio (Atwima Nwabiagya), Suleman Sanid (Ahafo Ano North), Carlos Ahenkora (Tema West), and William Owuraku Aidoo (Afigya Kwabre South).

The lawmakers’ motivations for their choice are still unknown, but some have speculated that they might want to take a break from the rigorous demands of parliamentary life, pursue other career opportunities, or completely retire from politics. It is plausible that the NPP’s decision-making process has been influenced by internal dynamics or individual considerations.
