1992 Constitution Requires “Significant Reforms”- Daniel Kwesi Ashiamah

Former Member of Parliament (MP) for Buem Consituency, Daniel Kwesi Ashiamah, has advocated for a review of the nation’s 1992 Constitution.

He claims that it need “major adjustments” after 30 years of operation.

He claimed that the amendment process outlined in Chapter 25 of the constitution is the only way to do this.

“After 30 years of existence, our constitution requires certain important revisions that can only be carried out by using the amendment mechanism outlined in Chapter 25 of the constitution. This is because a constitution cannot specify every conceivable event and make provisions for it,” Daniel Kwesi Ashiamah told Kwaku Owusu Adjei(Patoo) on Adwenekasa on Accra-based Original FM 91.9.

The younger generation is now joining in on the calls for constitutional amendments, which is perhaps understandable given their continual inability to see a better future in the aftermath of constant political upheaval.

Despite decades of stability and advances in democracy, he claimed, the nation’s laws could not remain inviolate; therefore, steps must be taken to close any gaps that may exist.

“We should never forget though that the constitution is a living document, and so whenever circumstances require, we should be prepared to make the necessary amendments to affect the needs of contemporary and future times, ”he added.
