Member of Parliament for Kwadaso constituency, Dr, Kingsley Nyarko has condemned what he called needless attacks between two notorious groups within the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) during their internal elections at Cape Coast.
According to Dr. Nyarko, the clash was avoidable and violent acts must reservedly be condemned by people from all political divides.
“In building a credible democracy, we must make sure that violence and violent acts are completely eradicated from our politics. The whole idea of democracy is consensus building – allowing the citizens to be part of the decision-making in their country. There’s no need to fight each other or among ourselves,” Dr. Kingsley Nyarko said on Friday, December 23.
Speaking on the Good Morning Ghana programme on Metro TV, the Kwadaso lawmaker and a member of the NPP tasked the leadership of the various political parties in the country to champion the violence eradication cause in the Ghanaian political scene.
“That is why for me, my good friends from the other side and us must all, resoundingly, condemn what happened at Cape Coast two weeks ago. We shouldn’t allow this to foster our democracy. I wouldn’t be happy if this happens in NPP.
“What happened at Cape Coast is needless. Those who were injured were needless. We should condemn them. We should be bold because this is not the time to try to score political points. We need to condemn them. It was not right,” Dr. Kingsley Nyarko averred.
Two NDC rival groups clashed during the party’s 10th Youth and Women’s Conference at Cape Coast in the Central Region which eventually injured two people.
Stones, blocks, sticks, clubs, and chairs, among others, were thrown at members of the opposite side when one side rejected the outcome of the results, accusing some leaders of manipulating the results.
Subsequently, the Police initiated a manhunt for some 16 persons in the violent disturbances, with bounty of GH¢10,000.00 placed on the suspects by the police.
A police statement said: “After an initial review of Police-specific video footage of the event, 16 suspects have so far been identified as some people involved in the violence and have been declared wanted.
“A GH¢10,000.00 reward has been set aside for any member of the public who can provide credible information to the police that can lead to the arrest of the suspects,” the statement indicated.
The statement also said, “investigation is ongoing to further identify, and arrest other perpetrators involved in the violence to face justice”.
