Abide by charter of democracy set aside by ECOWAS – Deputy Fishery Minister-designate to member states

Deputy Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development-designate, Musah Abdul-Aziz Ayaba, has appealed to the member states of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to adhere to the charter of democracy set aside by the body to enhance good governance and peaceful democratic practices.

He made this appeal when he appeared before the appointment committee of Ghana’s Parliament as the Deputy Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development Designate on 12th March 2024.

“What I would say about the situation is that in the sub-region, there is a challenge. But there were structures in place even before I joined the ECOWAS, there is a chatter of democracy that the ECOWAS States have signed onto,” he said.

“Violation of these chatter mostly is the problem in the sub-region,” he asserted.

“If you look at all the countries where we have these issues, there were some constitutional amendments or changes with regards to the term of office of their presidents, that led to all these crises,” Mr. Ayaba adding “So, Mr chairman what I would appeal that all ECOWAS states or all the countries in the community must go by the charter of democracy.”

“We must stick to whatever our constitution is saying, When your term of office is over, you just need to hand over peacefully so that development and peace would continue,” the MP said.

Musah Abdul-Aziz Ayaba served as a member Ghana delegation to the ECOWAS Parliament before his nomination.
