Accra 2023 Para Games to be used as ‘test case’ for next year’s African Games – Samson Deen

The President of the African Paralympic Committee (APC) has revealed that the Accra 2023 Paralympic Games will be used as a ‘test case’ for the upcoming African Games scheduled for next year.

The African continent will make history when the first-ever Para Games are held in Accra in September; however, the unprecedented event has been marred by numerous difficulties, forcing authorities to use the Paragames as a model for the 2023 African Games, which is also scheduled to be held in Ghana.

Speaking in an interview with Metro Sports, the President of the African Paralympics, Samson Deen, disclosed that preparations are still ongoing for the historic games despite the numerous challenges encountered by the federation, which has led to the reduction of the sporting disciplines from seven to three due to the unreadiness of some designated venues, but also assured that the games will serve as a “test case” for the 2024 African Games.

“I remember in a meeting with the Minister of Sports where he mentioned that the para games will be used as a case study for the African Games, which was postponed earlier,” Samson Deen said.

“The postponement of the games informed us to reduce the disciplines from seven to three since some of the facilities aren’t ready yet. Athletics, para-weightlifting, goalball, and sitting volleyball are all disciplines that have been postponed to later dates.”

The APC has stated that there will be competitions in the final three disciplines, and those events will start on September 3, 2023.
