The one-week observance commemorating the passing of former First Lady Theresa Kufuor took place at her residence in Peduase, located in the Eastern Region of Ghana on October 11,2023. The event was imbued with a rich display of culture and tradition, creating a captivating atmosphere.

In a quintessential Akan style, various dance groups showcased their rhythmic skills to the admiration of all present. At one point, even the former President couldn’t resist showing his approval by lifting two fingers.

Despite the attendees wearing black and red attire, this occasion was not marked by sadness. Instead, it served as a moment to celebrate the well-lived life of this remarkable woman.

Notable dignitaries including President Akufo-Addo, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, their spouses, ministers of state, members of parliament, traditional rulers, family, friends, and a diverse assembly of people from various walks of life paid their respects to a woman whose contributions had left an indelible mark on their lives.

Theresa Kufuor was a woman who supported her husband from the background, epitomizing the adage that “behind every successful man is a woman.” Many acknowledged her as a major pillar in her husband’s political career, even though she rarely engaged in political discussions. Her impact was unmistakable through the former president’s achievements.

Her influence extended to the health sector, where she was a nurse and midwife herself. Additionally, she championed education and was an advocate for the rights of women and girls.

Although her public presence waned after her husband’s tenure in 2009, her enduring impact resonated deeply among the hundreds of people who gathered at her residence to offer condolences to the family.

Her 87 years on earth were truly remarkable. The one-week observance served as a prelude to an elaborate state funeral scheduled to take place at the state house on November 16.
