Assin North by-election: Ama Daaku lauds Charles Opoku’s performance despite loss

A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) communications team, Ellen Ama Daaku, has commended the efforts of Charles Opoku in the just-held Assin North by-election despite losing to embattled politician James Gyakye Quayson.

Mr. Opokum a first-time parliamentary aspirant secured 12,630 votes representing 42.15 percent of the total votes cast although his votes were not enough to cling him onto power.

He was defeated by Mr. Gyakye Quayson who polled 17,245 votes representing 57.56 percent of the total valid votes cast

Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana on Monday, July 3, 2023, Madam Ama Daaku said Mr. Opoku deserves applause for polling over twelve thousand votes in his first attempt to represent his constituency in parliament.

“For a candidate who just came on three weeks to time [by-election], I believe he has done well. For a candidate who has never gone in for any election and for him to galvanize these votes in three weeks, for me, he’s done very well,” she emphasized.

Per the NPP rules, according to Ama Daaku, “when you have a by-election like this so close to the [main] election, we don’t have primaries in those constituencies again, so, Charles Opoku is going to run again in 2024. The same for MP for Kumawu. He’s also going to run without any primaries.“

“I’m sure the 12,360 [she erred. 12,630 instead] people will have another opportunity again [sic] in seventeen months to vote for Mr. Charles Opoku,” she noted.

Ellen Daaku further dispelled allegations that Mr. Opoku is engaged in illegal mining destroying water bodies across the country.

According to her, he works with a reputable mining firm in the country hence the public should disregard the negative rumours linking him to galamsey.
