Charles Bissue granted bail after Special Prosecutor interrogation

The former Secretary to the defunct Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM), Charles Bissue, voluntarily presented himself at the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) on Wednesday, 21 June 2023.

Mr. Bissue was detained around 11:45 GMT, according to a statement from the OSP, and then he was questioned by the staff of the Office.

Subsequently, he was given bail and released after the interview.

Charles Bissue was invited to attend and respond to questions regarding a current investigation into alleged corruption within the disbanded IMCIM ;ast week, but he did not honour the invitation.

This triggered an arrest warrant by the Office of the Special Prosecutor.

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) in a tweet on July 15, said it is legally mandated to cause the arrest of anyone of interest without a warrant.

The tweet came on the heels of a Human Rights Court issuing an interlocutory injunction barring the Special Prosecutor or its agents from arresting Charles Bissue.

“The general public is advised, that in the exercise of its police powers, the Office of the Special Prosecutor can arrest without a warrant, any person it reasonably suspects of having committed corruption or corruption-related offenses,” the OSP tweet read.
