Critics of Ofori-Atta’s turning the corner statement have a different corner — Dr. Tiah Mahama

Technical Advisor to the Office of the Vice President, Dr. Tiah Abdul-Kabiru Mahama has disapproved claims by critics that it is inaccurate that Ghana is currently making modest gains in turning the economy around after experiencing severe economic hardship in 2022.

He believes the government’s assertion of the economy is a true reflection of the reality on the ground.

His comments come as a response to Minority Leader Cassiel Ato Forson’s statement refuting Finance Minister Ofori Atta touting the country’s economic growth while presenting the 2023 Mid-Year Budget Review and Economic Statement.

“Let our minister [Finance Minister Ken Ofori Atta] not say anywhere that he has turned the corner,” Ato Forson said.

Speaking on Good Morning Ghana on Metro TV on Tuesday, August 1, 2021, Dr. Abdul-Kabiru Mahama asserted that the Minority probably had a corner that was different from what was contained in the 2023 Budget Statement, what the IMF said, and the Mid-Year Budget Review presented by Mr. Ofori-Atta.

To Dr. Abdul-Kabiru Mahama, “We are not in the position to declare whether the government has met or government has failed. It is the assessment that’s that is going to determine that.”

He believes the Akufo-Addo’s government is working extra hard to tick the necessary boxes that will enable them to secure the rest of the IMF loan to help stabilize the country’s economy as “the subsequent $600 million dollars and further releases are going to be based on the performances of government in terms of this quantitative criteria.”
