Doctors in KATH threaten to leave their post over accommodation challenges

Following the takeover of their current residences by private developers, physicians at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and other medical professionals have threatened to resign from their positions in order to look for new housing.

Healthcare providers are currently holding a critical meeting to discuss the problems related to accommodations.

The medical staff, especially those connected to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, allege they are being forced from their bungalows, which were allegedly sold to private developers, and that they were given a week’s notice to leave their current residences by the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council.

The Ghana Medical Association’s Ashanti Regional President, Dr. Paa Kwasi Baidoo, stressed told Citi News that the meeting’s conclusions will direct their future steps.

He emphasized the arrangement reached with Manhyia Palace for new accommodations before the property transfer, expressing shock at the abrupt relocation of hospital employees from their houses. However, it is said that this agreement has been ignored.

“You will notice that a lot of our staff live 15 to 20 minutes away from the hospital and all of a sudden, people will come and ask you to move from your place because it has been sold to them and we took that issue up and we met with Manhyia on it and it was agreed that a new place be prepared to move us there before you can take possession of the land, they have disregarded that with impunity and so we are meeting this morning.

“We will all leave the hospital to go and look for accommodation because we don’t have a place to sleep.”

The Manhyia Palace has acquired the state lands around Danyame and Nhyiaeso, although the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council claims it is moving all government employees inside this area.

The Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council, on the other hand, asserts that the relocation is part of a deliberate attempt to relocate all government employees inside a designated enclave of state lands around Danyame and Nhyiaeso, which have been turned over to the Manhyia Palace.

Refuting charges of forcible eviction and guaranteeing that the relocation is intended to improve working conditions for the employees, Ashanti Regional Minister Simon Osei Mensah announced that new facilities are being developed for the affected government personnel.

“A portion of state lands within Danyame and Nhyiaeso have been ceded to Manhyia and as a result, we have to relocate all government workers that live within that area.

“Some of the structures are sited on maybe an acre plot of land and in such instances, we demolish it and build more buildings to enable us to have enough places for the workers.”
