Election 2024: Alan-Bawumia ticket would’ve been NPP’s surest bet — Hackman Owusu Agyeman

Chairman of the Council of Elders of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Hackman Owusu Agyeman, has said the party pairing Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen for the 2024 presidential slot would have been the best to win the 2024 general elections.

He said for the first time in the history of the party, there are two strong competitors from the north and south divide that satisfy the criteria to lead the party.

The two are expected to contest against each other for the first time in a keen contest.

Although this will be the Vice President, Dr. Bawumia’s first attempt, Mr. Kyerematen, the former Trade, and Industry Minister, has contested against Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo thrice before he was elected President in 2016.

Speaking on Hot Seat on Original TV on Sunday, Mr. Owusu Agyeman stated that although he or the party has not officially conveyed his wish to the two aspirants, he would have wished the NPP to avert its mind and have a quiet consultative process to have a single ticket combining the two front liners.

Majority Leader in Parliament Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu and a former Director of Communications of the governing New Patriotic Party, NPP, Nana Akomea have expressed similar sentiments.

The NPP will close its nominations for the flagbearership race on Saturday, June 24, 2023..

Nine out of the ten aspirants who picked nomination forms have successfully filed.

Those who have filed nominations are Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Kennedy Agyapong, MP Assin Central, Kwabena Agyei Agyapong, former General Secretary, NPP, Kwadwo Poku, an energy expert, Alan Kyerematen, a former Trade and Industry Minister.

The rest are; Owusu Afriyie Akoto, former Food and Agriculture Minister, Boakye Agyarko, a former Energy Minister, Edward Addai Noko, former MP for Asante Mampong and Dr. Kofi Konadu Apraku an economist.
