Election 2024: Prioritize road safety, stop defacing road signs – NRSA to political parties

The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has issued a safety alert to political parties, urging them to prioritize road safety as they embark on campaigns, rallies, and meetings ahead of the 2024 general elections.

According to the NRSA, political seasons have consistently led to an increase in road traffic crashes, injuries, and deaths, and it is crucial for political leaders and party faithfuls to take stringent safety measures to protect motorists, riders, passengers, and pedestrians.

“The Road Safety Code of Conduct for political parties is a vital tool in minimizing road safety risks associated with political party activities. We entreat political parties to appoint Road Safety Officers to coordinate the safe transportation of party supporters at all levels”

The Authority also advised participants in political rallies and other activities to plan their journeys to avoid driving tired and at high speeds, and reminded motorists of the maximum speed limits on highways, built-up areas, and special zones such as schools and hospitals.

NRSA warned aspirants against defacing road signs with their posters and campaign materials, which can obstruct visibility and contribute to road crashes.

“We are counting on political party leaders to ensure their supporters’ safety before, during, and after the election period. Let us work together to prevent needless road crashes and save lives”

The NRSA noted that it has intensified its Stay Alive media campaign nationwide, in addition to increasing educational and regulatory activities in terminals and communities.

“We urge all political parties to prioritize road safety and take the necessary precautions to protect their supporters and other road users. Together, we can make our roads safer for everyone,” NRSA said.
