Ex-Menzgold boss charged with 39 counts, including defrauding by false pretences

Attorney General and Minister for Justice has filed additional charges against Nana Appiah Mensah, known by the moniker, NAM 1, the former Chief Executive Officer of Menzgold Ghana Limited.

Godfred Yeboah Dame filed the charges on Wednesday, August 30, 2023.

The trial will begin on September 19, 2023.

NAM 1 has been charged with 36 counts of offences including abetment, defrauding by false pretences, carrying on deposit-taking business without license, unlawful deposit-taking, money laundering among others.

“Investigations revealed that the accused persons under false pretences took a total sum of One billion, sixty hundred and eighty million, nine hundred and twenty thousand Ghana cedis (GH 1,680,920,000) from their customers which these customers have not recovered.

“Investigations further disclosed that between 2017 and 2018, the accused persons transferred huge sums of depositor’s funds from Menzgold Ghana Company Ltd. and Brew Marketing Consult Ltd to Zylofon Media, a company related to Al. Huge sums of money were also withdrawn by Al or transferred into his bank account for his personal use.

“Investigations have established that the money fraudulently obtained from depositors and dishonestly appropriated by the accused persons remained unpaid as Menagold Ghana Company Ltd.’s licence was revoked. In the course of investigations, a number of vehicles were recovered from the accused persons which have been auctioned, and the proceeds kept in an exhibit account. Some gold bars were also recovered from the accused persons,” excerpts of court documents available to Metro TV read.

He was previously charged by the Attorney General with cheating hundreds of consumers out of millions of cedis through his gold dealership enterprise.

Up until today, Wednesday, August 30, 2023, when new accusations were brought, the case has undergone a series of adjournments.

The additional charges follow Mr. Appiah Mensah’s announcement that locked-up monies would be released to Menzgold users in exchange for a payment of around GH650 for verification.

After receiving a lot of criticism from his customers and the general public, he later decided to change his mind about requiring former clients to buy a verification Access Card in order to confirm transactions and authenticate claims.
