Fatherhood: Building rapport with children the way to go – Sam George

Sam Nartey George, Member of Parliament for Ningo Prampram says fatherhood is the role a father plays in the lives of his children as such fathers must make conscious efforts to spend quality time with their children to build a rapport that has a strong effect on children’s future.

The NDC Parliamentarian was drawing lessons from a Father’s Day sermon preached on Sunday in support of a point earlier made by the host of Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana Dr. Randy Abbey on Tuesday, June 22, 2021.

“You know my Bishop said something on Sunday which was striking in a sermon on fatherhood. For me, what struck me was a sentence. He said ‘being a father is not a title it a function. And it goes to support a lot of what you said because I was following the story whiles I was coming as in the fact that it goes beyond just the material provided to even the emotional support and provision” he said.

Sam George said his intervention in home affairs brought still into the situation stating “Even with my little kids, the boys, there are times I’m sitting in the hall and they are at the play area and I can hear their mother screaming her lungs out and saying “stop it, stop it, stop it”. It doesn’t stop. Me just popping around the corner and showing my face and saying “herrh”, everything ceases and that’s the role a father plays in the life of children that is indispensable” Sam George added.

Stressing his point, Sam George indicated that the role of a father in the lives of his children must be on daily basis, stating he has had to engage his six-year-old child to demystify truths about fatherhood.

“And so, the function of being a father for me is with each passing day and you know my little boy, Jerry asked me one of the days. He is going to turn six this year. He asked me he said ‘but daddy, Saturday and Sunday too you go to work?’ Because Saturdays and Sundays are actually the days you get the opportunity to work in the constituency and do the social activities in the constituency. And so with the kind of conversations he is beginning to have with me, I have to tailor my weekends such that during the weekdays that he doesn’t get to see me a lot and I don’t get to spend a lot of time with him, I’m able to spend quality time with him on the weekends,” Sam Goerge stated.

The Ningo Prampram lawmaker explained that the times have changed where modern kids can engage their parents and build effective communication. The situation was different in his time when fathers commanded respect and diminished chances of developing a good rapport

“That’s the world we live in now. The kids we have today are way more expressive and so you need to explain to him because you are shaping how he would also be a father tomorrow,” he concluded.
