Gender Ministry condemns inhumane ftreatment of a female at Kupelga

The Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection has in no certain terms condemned the harsh treatment of a female in the Upper East Region.

“Violence against women and girls is not justified and must not be tolerated no matter where, how and who committed the offence,” the Ministry noted in a statement dated Tuesday, June 13.

The Ministry emphasized that violence against women and girls has negative effects on their physical, mental, and emotional health and development and that this cannot be tolerated.

“The Ministry strongly condemns this cruel, brutal, and barbaric act meted out to the young lady. This act is a blatant breach of her human rights and dignity and is thus punishable by law,” the release noted.

Background

In the widely shared video on social media, a group of villagers, including old women, men, girls, and children, were seen circling the naked victim, who was sitting on the ground and coated in dirt from head to toe.

They could be heard yelling indignantly about whatever misdeed the girl with only bra on might have perpetrated.

In the footage, onlookers urged her to lie flat on her back, forcing her legs spread and filming her nether regions.

They then took her bra off, leaving her naked on the ground.

She was then struck with what appeared to be a crude weapon, and blood appeared to cover her forehead and part of her face.

She was then compelled to flee the village and into what appeared to be a barren jungle.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service have arrested four suspects at Kupelga in connection with the viral video in which a female victim is seen being subjected to inhumane and degrading treatment by a group of people.

The suspects, Awizore Amolt, Akolbila Asorwogo, Atibila Aladago and Akolbila Ben, were arrested in a police intelligence operation in the early hours of Tuesday, 13th June 2023, following a preliminary investigation into the said video.

The four suspects are currently in Police custody and assisting the investigation while efforts continue to arrest other accomplices to face justice.
