Ghanaians do not understand the role of film in economic building – David Dontoh

Ghanaian veteran actor and television personality who has starred in numerous local and international films, David Kwame Dontoh, affectionately referred to in the movie world as Uncle David, has stated emphatically that Ghana as a country still lacks the understanding of the role of film in the restructuring of our economy.

Kofi Abranteɛ” (Kofi Gentleman) expressed this on Metro Television’s Entertainment Review show on Thursday, 20th July 2023.

He explained that Ghanaians really have not understood film plays a very important role in the development of a country and that it can be used as a tool to market everything from festivals to rites of passage.

“Film gets you to know places and promote every aspect of our lives,” he noted.

David Dontoh has been very influential in the development of television and drama, especially during the golden age of theatre in Ghana in the 80s and 90s.

He took up acting in 1980 after seeing a National Film and Television Institute (NAFTI) newspaper advert inviting potential actors to come forward for training in stage and film acting and many more.

David Dontoh has been featured in the Coming to Africa, Welcome to Ghana movie.

Coming to Africa, Welcome to Ghana, Ghana is a cinematic masterpiece and boasts of a stellar cast and crew with Hollywood actor Khalil Kain taking on a major role alongside an amazing Ghanaian ensemble, many of whom are appearing together on screen for the first time.

David Dontoh said the movie will ignite the ailing Ghanaian movie industry, explaining that “Coming to Africa, Welcome to Ghana, will boost tourism in the country because it projects Ghana positively to the rest of the world.

He further urged all sundry to attend the premier scheduled for Friday, July 21, 2023, at the Silver Bird Cinemas to witness the great mark in filmmaking and the evolution of the film industry.
