I will pay attention to players in the GPL — Hughton

Black Stars coach Chris Hughton has pledged to spend more time in Ghana and pay close attention to players in the Ghana Premier League.

This promise came after some football loving Ghanaians criticised him for making public his 25-man roster for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations double-header without including any local players.

“I will be spending more time in Ghana. I will be watching more games. I am constantly being made aware of players who are doing well. I’ll be paying more attention to [GPL] games because it is important that we have a strong national league.”

The 64-year-old disclosed at his unveiling as Ghana’s head coach at the SG Mall in Kumasi on Monday, March 20, 2023..

Hughton’s debut match is set to take place on Thursday, a 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Angola at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi. Before facing the Palancas Negras, four days later in Luanda as they aim to book their place at next year’s tournament.

The former Northern Ireland international who has signed a contract until 31 December 2024 is very optimistic and determined to take the Black Stars to higher heights.
