JUSAG calls for protection, risk allowance

The Judicial Service Staff Association of Ghana (JUSAG) has called for adequate security protection and some risk allowance for its members following the recent attacks at the Tamale District Court.

According to JUSAG, members must nurture and protect the justice system with the immense responsibility of shaping the future of the nation by upholding the principles of justice and the rule of law but will have to be protected.

Samuel Afotey Otu, President of JUSAG made this call at the 2023 Judicial Service Staff Durbar in Cape Coast.

On August 28, some community members in the  Northern Region stormed the Tamale District Court over an alleged shielding of a drug peddler, whose actions are said to have been destroying lives of the youth of Tamale.

They besieged the court in an attempt to have him prosecuted which led to the exchange of gunshots with at least three persons reported injured.

This incident in Tamale and recent reported assaults on court bailiffs are what JUSAG says required adequate security protection and risk allowances.

President of JUSAG, Mr Samuel Afotey Out said the incident is a wake-up call for its members to be considered for risk allowances.

Chief Justice, Her Ladyship Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo admonished Staff of the Judicial Service especially court bailiffs to desist from the act of demanding money from people they serve court processes on.

She said the staff, including herself, are public servants and are supposed to render services following their conditions of service.

Some retired staff of the Justice Service from cleaners, registrars, clerks, and interpreters among others were rewarded for their service.
