Michael Edwards set for new job with Liverpool owners FSG

Ex-Liverpool sporting director Michael Edwards is set to return to work for the club’s Fenway Sports Group owners.

His exact role has not been announced but reports say he will oversee football operations for the Reds.

It is expected one of his first tasks will be to appoint a new sporting director at the Anfield club.

Edwards had turned down one approach by FSG to bring him back after Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp announced he would be stepping down at the end of the season.

Liverpool have been without a sporting director following Jorg Schmadtke’s exit in January and they have been linked with Richard Hughes, who will leave his role as Bournemouth technical director at the end of the season.

Edwards joined Liverpool in 2011 under FSG and became sporting director in 2016 before leaving the club in summer 2022.

FSG are known to hugely respect and admire Edwards and continued to work on his return after his initial rejection.

Edwards brought in a number of key players during his time as Liverpool sporting director, including goalkeeper Alisson Becker, defender Virgil van Dijk and forward Mohamed Salah.

He has most recently been working as a consultant for Ludonautics – a sports advisory business set up by Ian Graham, who was Liverpool’s director of research from 2012 to 2023.
