Minority vows to prevent any ‘cover-up’ in cocaine bust investigation

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Caucus in Parliament has expressed its commitment to ensuring a transparent and thorough investigation into the recent cocaine bust by Belgian authorities.

The bust has implicated Ghana Airport Company Limited (GACL) operatives and raised concerns about the government’s handling of the matter.

“We shall do everything in our power to avoid a cover-up. We are keenly following the government’s handling of this matter, and we share the concerns of Ghana’s international partners that an independent probe would have been more confidence-inspiring”

The NDC Caucus led by MP for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has questioned the expansion of the investigative panel from 4 to 10 members, which includes political appointees and raises concerns about impartiality.

“The rather strange expanded investigative panel from 4 to 10 have raised additional concerns in diplomatic and security circles”

The Caucus has also criticized the government’s communication on the matter, calling it “an unmitigated disaster” noting that but for a Herald newspaper report, government would have been silent on the matter and not issued press statement confirming the arrest in Belgium.

The NDC Caucus has vowed to continue pressing for answers when Parliament resumes.

“We shall have a lot more to do on the apparent return of NPP cocaine scandals. We will not let this matter drop until Ghanaians and the international community get the truth”

The Caucus’s statement comes as the investigative panel’s report is expected to be submitted to the Ghana Airport Company Limited (GACL) Managing Director, Mrs. Yvonne N.A. Opare, by close May 3, 2024. However, sources on the panel, have expressed doubts about meeting the deadline.
