The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has retained Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as the party’s running mate for the upcoming 2024 presidential elections.
The announcement followed weeks of speculation and calls from interest groups in the NDC to maintain the revered professor for the second time.
This was contained in a statement released to the media after the flagbearer John Dramani Mahama finished a consultative meeting with both the National Executive Committee (NEC) and the Council of Elders of the party.
A distinguished academic and leader, the party said Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang brings a wealth of experience and expertise to her new role, saying her tenure as Minister for Education and groundbreaking appointment as the first female Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast have solidified her reputation as a trailblazer in education and public service.
The statement also said throughout her career, she has championed the cause of women’s empowerment and leadership, earning admiration and respect from colleagues and constituents alike.
With her appointment, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang emerges as a formidable candidate, poised to make history and contribute to the advancement of Ghana’s political landscape. As the NDC gears up for the upcoming elections, her nomination reflects a commitment to diversity, inclusivity, and progressive leadership, setting the stage for a vibrant and dynamic campaign season ahead.
