NDC parliamentary vetting: 2020 Agona West PC disqualified

NDC parliamentary vetting: 2020 Agona West PC disqualified

The Central Regional branch of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has surprisingly disqualified its 2020 Parliamentary Candidate for the Agona West Constituency, Mr. Paul Ofori Amoah.

His disqualification by the vetting committee was inspired by several petitions submitted to the committee by some party faithful from the constituency ahead of his vetting.

Having led the party in the 2020 elections in the Agona West constituency and coming close to the seat by garnering 27, 673 representing 46.75percent of the total valid votes cast as against the NPP’s candidate Cynthia Morrison who emerged winner with a total of 30,519 votes, supporters of Mr. Ofori Amoah believe he deserved yet another chance to lead the party.

However, they were appalled to learn about his disqualification only a few minutes after appearing before the vetting committee.

Even though party officials would not make public the reasons behind the disqualification, Metro News gathers that about 20 petitions against the aspirant were forwarded to the committee ahead of the vetting, and key amongst the petitions is an accusation of causing disunity in the party.

The Agona West Constituency NDC Communications Officer Abdul Wahab Africa Zion registered his displeasure at the development.

He describes the disqualification as unfortunate considering the aspirant’s positive contributions towards the party.

Abdul Wahab Africa Zion indicated that the vetting committee’s decision would be respected.

Meanwhile, Mr. Abdul Wahab Africa Zion further urged the disqualified candidate to appeal the decision if he desires to do so.

The disqualification of Paul Ofori Amoah makes the NDC Agona West Constituency parliamentary primaries a two-party contest between Wiah-Asomani Maxwell and Ernestina Ofori Dangbey who are appearing number one and two respectively on the ballot.

Paul Ofori Amoah was in the round-up to the 2020 elections arrested in connection with an assassination attempt on the Agona West Member of Parliament, Cynthia Morrison.

His arrest followed the initial arrest of four persons who had in their possession cheques that were issued by him.
