NDC to be blamed for pre-Assin North by-election brouhaha — Ama Daaku

A Communications Team Member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ellen Ama Daaku, has accused the main opposition National Democratic Congress of instigating violence ahead of the upcoming Assin North by-election.

Madam Ellen Ama Daaku also noted that if not the recklessness of the National Democratic Congress, there would have been no need for a by-election.

“We’re in this particular by-election because the NDC filled in somebody who wasn’t a citizen of Ghana at the time he filled, according to the supreme court. I’m not the one who said it, so, we are in this particular by-election because you [the NDC]

“You didn’t answer the question whether your candidate [James Gyakye Quayson] was a citizen of Ghana at the time he was filing. You have put all of us through this and we’re here again. You haven’t finished solving your internal problems and you’re here accusing somebody else,” she said on Metro TV’s  Good Morning Ghana.

The National Democratic Congress has alleged that there is a plot by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the Electoral Commission to unlawfully insert an unqualified candidate into the Assin North voters’ register.

The party’s National Communications Officer argues that one Mr. Charles Opoku is not a registered voter in the constituency.

But Madam Daaku says the accusation cannot hold water because Article 94 of the 1992 Constitution of the Republic of Ghana is clear on who can contest for Member of Parliament and if Mr. Opoku is eligible he can contest for the vacant seat.

Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission has denied claims by Sammy Gyamfi, describing it as a fabrication, and urged the public to treat it with the contempt it deserves.
